Despite fierce resistance from different organizations and a diplomatic intervention, in 2013 two famous Parisian auction houses publicly sold over one hundred Native American masks. Most of these were Katsinam masks belonging to the Hopi, a tribe from Arizona. The mere depiction of these cult objects in an auction catalogue represents a huge insult to their traditions. This work developed from an engagement with those depictions as an ambivalent act aiming to produce profane works of art. A selection of nine Katsinam figures were reproduced in denim, rendered with a “used look”, and then exhibited on stands of varying height, similarly to how they were displayed in the auction houses.
