ME’s

→ Me (declaring & collecting territories)

Me (declaring territories): 12 flags | 2016 | silk, cotton, polyester | 30 x 45 to 50 x 70 cm
Me (collecting territories): found objects in two display cases | 2016 | 120 x 130 cm

The works in the Me-series were created for the exhibition Psst…there is still space in outer space organized at the Pavelhaus museum and cultural centre, curated by Markus Waitschacher. They consider the extent to which terrestrial insignia and assertions of power can be enforced in the event of the transgression of extra-terrestrial boundaries.

Me (declaring territories) is a series of absurd, anachronistic textile images designed to resemble flags and arranged to form a “meta-flag”. The emblems used throughout the work are all based on prototypical symbols of power.

The work Me (collecting territories) consists of display cases containing arrangements of found objects and refuse from the present day. It draws upon the principle of scientific collection that developed over the course of the voyages of research and conquest undertaken by colonial powers and national economic competitions from the beginning of the modern era. Artifacts, industrially manufactured fragments and natural objects are impartially arranged alongside each other, representing a panopticon of modern-day detritus.
