The book Schnepfenstrich mit Saufeder was based on conversations held with 14 people over the course of several visits to the exhibition in the Gunsmiths’ and Hunting Museum in Ferlach, Austria. The participants in these conversations all had different connections with the venue and different occupational backgrounds, and some of them were familiar with hunting and gun-making. Original quotations from these conversations were added to the book in quotation marks and combined with images of the exhibition, close-up photos from the museum and drawings. These drawings are based on findings from research in professional literature and on the Internet.

The museum itself is an important tourist attraction within the region and is housed inside Schloss Ferlach. The exhibition space is divided into two broad thematic areas. The first part provides information on the historical and cultural background of hunting and gun-making, while the second part – entitled “Mythos Jagd / Hunting Mythologies” – displays items from the collection of hunting trophies owned by the late millionaire and supporter of the museum Helmut Horten and his close friend Dr. Hellmuth Reichel.

The book was ultimately launched in OTELO, the public technology lab in Ferlach, as the museum management unfortunately turned the project down during its development. After an intervention by the mayor, the second book presentation took place in the museum a year later.
